Lush Sleepy Review – Baby and M-I-L’s Verdict

Little one was still waking up every 2 hours at night when I returned to work after maternity leave. Let’s just say I had a few lunchtime naps in the breastfeeding room (I was pumping twice a day). I got into work one morning (a couple of months after I’d started) and a colleague excitedly told me about an article claiming that Lush Sleepy Lotion had worked wonders for a toddler. Until now, I didn’t realise how obvious my sleep deprivation was as she offered to go get me some immediately as apparently it was starting to sell out.

I wasn’t convinced but I was open to trying *almost* anything so I gave in and gave her some cash. Here is what she came back with. The first thing that crossed my mind was “What a small tub for a body lotion?” Maybe it’s for doll-sized bodies. Haha!

Lush Sleepy Body Lotion

I opened it and was greeted by a purple lotion with a rather nice lavender fragrance. My next thought turned to its suitability for babies as I’d recently read that essential oils should be used sparingly. Quick Googling revealed nothing conclusive.

That evening, I was especially excited after bath time. This could be the night we all get some decent sleep. I rubbed a very small amount on his hand – as a sort of patch test. When nothing appeared, I rubbed it on his chest and back, prayed and continued with the nighttime routine. He woke up after 2.5 hours. An improvement of 30 minutes. Too early to celebrate? Sadly, there was no improvement for the rest of the night.

At work the next day, everyone was eager for an update and all encouraged me to keep trying. After a week, we were no closer to more sleep! I kept using it because it smelt nice and I wanted to get my money’s worth.

Shortly afterwards, we went on holiday with the in-laws and my mother-in-law mentioned she was having trouble sleeping so I passed on the lotion. One man’s trash and all that. The first night she used it, she fell asleep more easily but unfortunately the change didn’t persist for subsequent nights.

Incidentally, that was the holiday he started sleeping better. Not sure whether it was linked to the end of breastfeeding (I couldn’t cope with resource drain from baby inside and a 13 month old) or he was just ready in his own time.

So, Lush Sleepy Body Lotion did not work for my 12 month old or his grandma but we did eventually get some more sleep. That’s not saying it won’t work for you but just don’t put all your hope in it!

  1. I have heard about the hype with Sleepy so it was very interesting to read your review. I actually have a tub of the stuff in my bathroom…maybe that’s where it’ll stay!

  2. Thanks for that I have a poor sleeper (she’s nearly 3). I’ll not waste my money, just wait it out. Sure 18 year olds sleep through right? 😉
